Dear Colleagues,



The PhD program in Comparative Culture and Language at Arizona State
University is inviting student applications. Our doctorate focuses on
research questions and themes that cannot be fully explored within the
traditional disciplinary boundaries. The program offers the opportunity to
pursue transdisciplinary and cross-cultural research. In consultation with
their advisors, students do their coursework in a primary and
a secondary area of emphasis. Students are expected to have advanced
proficiency in one language other than English (this is the language of
primary emphasis) and at least reading knowledge in a second language other
than English (language of secondary emphasis).



Our faculty’s areas of expertise include Chinese, Korean, Japanese,
Spanish, German, French,  Italian, Ancient Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Arabic,
Russian, and Romanian Studies.  Other interdisciplinary areas of research
for our faculty include Translation Studies, Film and Media Studies,
Postcolonial Studies, Ecocriticism and Sustainability, Medical Humanities,
Digital Humanities, Women and Gender Studies, Linguistics (particularly,
Spanish, French, Korean, and Slavic).  You may browse this list of current

Graduate students can receive financial support through teaching
assistantships (TA). For the 2024-25 academic year, Arizona State
University’s stipend for the TA appointment is $12,293 for Fall 2024 and
$13,272 for Spring 2025; in addition to covering tuition fees and medical
insurance. Typically, our students with TAships graduate within five to six
years.


Applications for Fall 2025 opened on September 1, 2024. Students who wish
to be considered for a teaching assistant position must apply by *January
15, 2025* and submit a special TA application
