The Marianne Brown Dietrich Breakthrough Scholar Chair of Korean Studies at the assistant professor level

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (http://www.deall.pitt.edu/) at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a Marianne Brown Dietrich Breakthrough Scholar Chair of Korean Studies. The appointment will begin in the fall of 2025, pending budgetary approval.  

The Department seeks candidates with outstanding promise in research, teaching, and program development. Candidates should have primary expertise in premodern and modern Korean literature. We especially welcome applicants with additional interests or strengths in a secondary field, such as performing arts and visual culture, gender and sexuality, diaspora, and transcultural communication. 

The successful candidate will develop long-term cross-disciplinary research and teaching initiatives with colleagues at the University. The new hire will also work with colleagues in East Asian Languages and Literatures and other units to create innovative, collaborative projects. 

This position is designated as Marianne Brown Dietrich Breakthrough Scholar Chair of Korean Studies at the assistant professor level. The position provides substantial resources to help establish research during the initial five years of appointment. As such, only exceptional applicants with exciting research agendas and promising records will be considered for appointment. 

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures benefits from strong collaboration with other campus units, including our Asian Studies Center (a U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center in East Asian Studies), our East Asian Library, the Humanities Center, and other departments including History, Anthropology, History of Art and Architecture, Theatre, Music, and Religious Studies. 

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Korean literature or a closely related field at the time of appointment and have experience in college-level teaching. A record of scholarly activity, such as the publication of articles, will strengthen the application. Applicants must have native or near-native skills in English and Korean in all skill areas. 

Applications should include: 1. a letter of application describing research and teaching interests; 2. a DEI statement; 3. a current curriculum vitae, which includes a list of publications; 4. a list of three names and contact information for reference; 5. a scholarly writing sample; 6. a teaching statement that details your approach to teaching and ideas for innovative classroom assignments; 7. A sample course syllabus of an advanced undergraduate course in the area of your specialty
