*Event Description*
Since the end of last year, North Korea has defined inter-Korean relations
as relations between ‘two hostile states’ while simultaneously advancing
its nuclear and missile capabilities, thereby escalating military threats.
In particular, the deepening military cooperation between Russia and North
Korea poses a threat to global peace and stability, extending beyond just
Northeast Asia. This makes the current situation a critical juncture for
addressing issues on the Korean Peninsula.

At the same time, slow but irreversible changes are taking place within
North Korean society, such as marketization, informatization, and the
institutionalization of corruption, as highlighted in the Report on North
Korea’s Economy and Society (February 2024). In his special lecture,
Minister of Unification Kim Yung Ho will discuss the evolving unification
and security environment surrounding the Korean Peninsula and the internal
changes within North Korea, as well as the ROK government’s policies toward
unification and North Korea. He will emphasize that the unification of the
Korean Peninsula, grounded in universal values such as freedom, human
rights, and democracy, is a shared goal for the ROK and the international
community—one that contributes to global peace and prosperity.

Founded in the year 2016, the GW Institute for Korean Studies (GWIKS) is a
university wide Institute housed in the Elliott School of International
Affairs at the George Washington University. The establishment of the GWIKS
in 2016 was made possible by a generous grant from the Academy of Korean
Studies (AKS). The mission of GWIKS is to consolidate, strengthen, and grow
the existing Korean studies program at GW, and more generally in the
greater D.C. area and beyond. The Institute enables and enhances productive
research and education relationships within GW, and among the many experts
throughout the region and the world.
