POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of
California, Berkeley seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant
Professor in premodern (pre-1910) Korean culture. The successful candidate
will have a rigorous grounding in premodern Korean language (either
vernacular Korean or literary Sinitic [Hanmun]) in addition to research
expertise in one or more of the following: book history or print culture;
popular culture; visual or material culture; theater and performance; or
thought and religion. We are particularly interested in recruiting scholars
with an interest in gender studies, women’s literature, and feminist
approaches.

QUALIFICATIONS
*Basic qualifications* (required at time of application)

PhD (or equivalent international degree), or enrolled in PhD or equivalent
international degree-granting program at the time of application.
*Additional qualifications* (required at time of start)

Advanced training and competence in Korean Studies encompassing
specializations in literature and literary studies, with the proven ability
to conduct primary research using premodern Korean sources in either
vernacular Korean or literary Sinitic (Hanmun).

Primary research competency in Korean Studies sufficient to contribute to
undergraduate teaching in modern or pre-modern materials in the original.

Evidence of scholarly impact and promise in research: innovative thinking
and methodological rigor; likelihood of making original and significant
contributions to the advancement of the field; ability to write clearly and
argue cogently.

Demonstrated teaching ability at all levels from lower-division to graduate
seminars; potential to develop new courses and ability to contribute to
Department of East Asian Languages & Cultures teaching needs including
major gateway lecture courses in Korean Studies.

*Preferred qualifications*

Advanced literacy and proficiency in Korean by the start date.

Native or near-native fluency in Korean and English; proven ability to
conduct primary research using premodern Korean sources in either
vernacular Korean or literary Sinitic (Hanmun); broad competence in
critical approaches and theoretical frameworks in the humanities;
demonstrated excellence in teaching and research.

Potential for excellence in service and professional activity to raise the
profile of Korean Studies at UC Berkeley.
