JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Department of Asian Studies <https://asian.la.psu.edu/> at Penn State
(University Park) invites applications for a full-time teaching faculty
position (non-tenure-track) in Korean history (period open), starting in
Spring 2025, with flexibility. The position will be filled at the rank of
Assistant Teaching Professor. This position offers full benefits and is a
term appointment with the possibility of renewal.
We are seeking applicants with an interest in teaching courses on the
cultural, social, and political history of Korea. The prospective faculty
member will contribute to the Korean major and minor and participate in the
academic and cultural activities organized by Penn State’s Institute for
Korean Studies and the department. The courses taught by this faculty
member will also attract students from various disciplines such as history;
comparative literature; women's, gender, and sexuality studies; art
history; and global and international studies.
Responsibilities include teaching introductory to advanced-level courses
(potentially including graduate courses) on Korean history as well as
participation in programmatic service. Teaching load is three courses per
semester.
*A Ph.D. in premodern or modern Korean history, or a related field, is
required by the date of the appointment.* Fluency in the Korean language or
near-native proficiency in using Korean materials is also required.
In addition, successful candidates must either have demonstrated a
commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and diverse campus
community, or describe one or more ways they would envision doing so, given
the opportunity.
