*Abstract: *This talk examines how contemporary Korean literature portrays
motherhood through language and narratives, exploring how these depictions
shape societal perceptions of mothers in Korea. It focuses on themes such
as educational expectations, familial roles, and the cultural burdens
placed on mothers, analysing how linguistic and literary choices reflect
and critique the evolving identity of Korean mothers. By bridging
linguistic and cultural analysis, this talk offers insights into the
complex realities of motherhood in modern Korean society.

*Bio: Professor Jieun Kiaer *is the Young Bin Min-KF Professor of Korean
Linguistics at the University of Oxford. Her research examines the dynamic
relationship between language, culture, and society, with a particular
focus on Korean linguistics and the Korean Wave (Hallyu). Her notable
publications include The Sounds of Korean (2012), The Routledge Course in
Korean Translation (2018), Korean Literature Through the Korean Wave
(2019), A Linguistic Image of Womanhood in South Korea (2022), and The
Language of Hallyu: More than Polite (2023).
