Professor Song Hyok-key of the Department of Sinographic Literature at Korea University will lead a special seminar based on An Anthology of Korean Classical Prose (KONG & PARK, 2025). Designed especially for hanmun beginners, the seminar offers a rare opportunity to read selected Korean classical prose texts in their original hanmun form, accompanied by English and modern Korean translations. Participants will explore foundational themes in Korean literature and thought while building skills in literary Sinitic through close reading. The seminar welcomes students and early-career researchers interested in deepening their understanding of Korea’s rich classical tradition.

This seminar is a translation workshop centered on medieval historical sources detailing relations between Silla and early Tang dynasty. Through close reading and group discussion, participants will deepen their understanding of textual interpretation, English translation methods, and historical context. The seminar aims to develop both classical Chinese reading skills and historical sensibility, while shedding light on the dynamics of early East Asian interactions through documentary sources.

This monthly reading group brings together early-career researchers in Korean studies—working across philosophy, literature, and history—to discuss scholarship on Neo-Confucianism. The August 1 session will be held as a special one-time open-door meeting, welcoming all interested participants. The selected reading is 󰡔역학과 주자학: 역학은 어떻게 주자학을 만들었는가?󰡕 (주광호, 예문서원, 2020). Those who have read the book are encouraged to join the discussion, but observers are also warmly invited to attend without preparation.

Each summer and winter, the Digital Hanmun Studies Center at the Institute for Sinographic Literatures and Philology (ISLP), Korea University, offers its Digital Tools and Methods for Classical Studies workshop for scholars and students in the field. This workshop aims to deepen participants’ understanding of the Digital Humanities and strengthen practical competencies in the field. This program will feature leading experts who specialize in designing and analyzing DH projects in Korea. They will share diverse methodologies for classical studies, as well as practical knowledge in data literacy. Participants will have opportunities to freely raise questions and exchange insights regarding challenges in their own research. We warmly invite all those interested to join us for this valuable learning and networking opportunity.

Koreanist RetreatFrom Ascetic Table to Cultural BrandExploring Temple Cuisine in Contemporary Korea
This tour critically examines Korean temple cuisine, moving beyond a simple culinary experience to analyze its evolution from Buddhist ascetic practice to a modern cultural brand. Starting with a cooking class at the Korean Temple Food Culture Center, we will then visit Jogyesa in urban Seoul. This visit will contextualize the temple's emergence within the distinct historical trajectory of modern Korean Buddhism, differing from premodern monastic structures. This session offers a unique opportunity to engage with temple cuisine and its sites through direct experience and a critical, anthropologically informed lens.
□ Schedule: July 3, 10AM□ Language: Korean□ Narrator: Koh Young studied classical literature at university and holds a deep interest in premodern stage plays and daily life. His extensive reading in food literature beyond mere cookbooks consistently informs his writing. He currently writes a column series for Kyunghyang Shinmun and is the author of 《카스테라와 카스텔라 사이 (Between Castella and Kasutella)》.□ Tour Route- 10:00-12:00 | Korean Temple Food Culture CenterParticipants will engage in a practical cooking class, learning to prepare temple dishes.
