Dear colleagues,
I am humbled to share the recent publication of the book "Corea, objeto de deseo" (Editorial Verbum, 2026, ISBN: 979-13-7018-109-3), the first Spanish-language approach to the hectic, dramatic, and turbulent period of Korea's opening to the West, coinciding with the last throes of the Choson dynasty.
"Korea, object of desire. The Korean Question and the New Asian Order (1864–1910)", as the full title would be translated into English, covers the period between the accession to the throne of King Kojong in 1864 and the consummation of the country's subjugation to Meiji Japan in 1910, a period during which the country opened to the West after centuries of seclusion.
Through a broad historical lens, this work examines the internal events of the late Choson dynasty in Korea. While focusing on domestic developments, it remains highly attentive to the convergence of regional and international interests in Northeast Asia during the late 19th century, analyzing the circumstances that shaped the Korean policies of China, Japan, Great Britain, Russia, and the United States.
The work seeks to bring this critical stage of Korean history closer to scholars of Korean and Asiatic studies in the Spanish language, but also aims to engage those readers interested in delving into the complex game of powers on which the international order in the Far East was based during those years.
