I would appreciate it if you could circulate this CFP to the list members. Best, Ben Han The Global-Local Friction in Korean Media and Popular Culture in the Age of Artificial Intelligence April 2-3, 2027 Institute for Korean Studies Indiana University Bloomington Global-local entanglements are shaping the transnational flow of Korean media and popular culture. Many scholars have examined the tension between the global and the local in Korean media through the lenses of hybridity, transnational proximity, and hegemonic mimicry. These theoretical concepts have explored the complex and often ambivalent interactions between global and local forces within Korean media and popular culture. Rather than exploring the global and the local in Korean media and popular culture through existing theoretical frameworks, this conference seeks to examine global-local interactions as friction. Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing’s (2005, 4) concept of friction, which she defines as “the awkward, unequal, unstable, and creative qualities of interconnection across difference,” enables us to investigate how “cultures are not only continuously co-produced in the interactions in the form of friction.” Drawing on interdisciplinary methodologies in Korean media and popular culture, this conference aims to explore how Korean cinema, television, music, and digital media reveal complex and dynamic forms of friction, such as genre syncretism, racial and ethnic difference, melodrama and gender, and artificial intelligence. These diverse forms of friction not only enable the formation of global connections but also reflect the intricate processes of cultural negotiation and interaction that occur at the levels of texts, performances, and digital practices. Additionally, the purpose of the conference is to analyze myriad forms of friction in Korean media and popular culture through different methodological frameworks, including genre and textual analysis, platform studies, and fandom studies. By investigating diverse forms of friction in Korean media and pop culture, the conference will address how we might reimagine the global-local entanglements beyond reductive binaries such as universalism vs. specificity, homogeneity vs. heterogeneity, West vs. East, and real vs. artificial. In doing so, the conference will explore how the study of friction within global connections is shaped by complex interactions and negotiations of genre, platforms, and affective sentiments. This two-day conference, supported by the Center for International Affairs (CEFIA) of the Academy of Korean Studies, will bring together junior and senior scholars working in Korean media and popular culture studies across various disciplinary fields. The conference will provide an opportunity for scholars to network, exchange ideas, and receive meaningful feedback on their research projects. Deadline: Please send a 300-word abstract and a 150-word biography to Benjamin Han at benhan at iu.edu. The abstract submission deadline is October 31, 2026. Accepted abstracts will be notified at the end of November. Abstracts from junior scholars are especially welcome. Presenters will be required to submit a full manuscript of their paper prior to the conference. Submitted papers will be considered for publication in a special issue of a peer-reviewed journal or an edited volume. Conference Support: Due to limited funding, we will only be able to fully fund airfare for scholars based in North America. All conference presents will be provided with airfare, accommodation, and transportation from Indianapolis International Airport to Indiana University Bloomington. In this talk, I Jonathan Kief introduces his new book, "Triangle Republics: Cross-Border Literary Transits between the Cold War Koreas and Japan" (Columbia UP, 2025), which follows the multi-directional itineraries of literary exchange linking Cold War-era North Korea, South Korea, and Japan. Although the two postcolonial Koreas are typically seen as isolated from each other, Triangle Republics demonstrates that texts continued to circulate between them with the assistance of an array of colleagues in Japan. Highlighting the creative ways in which poets, playwrights, novelists, critics, and academics in these three locations crossed boundaries of language, ideology, and genre, the book offers a new perspective on this era that emphasizes its vibrant, dynamic, and interconnected nature. I Jonathan Kief is Associate Professor of Korean Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also serves as Associate Chair and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. He is a scholar of modern Korean literature and culture whose research explores the movement of words, sounds, and ideas across the spatial, ideological, and media boundaries of the Cold War era. Jonathan Kief (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill). *Triangle Republics* is a groundbreaking contribution to literary studies of Korea and beyond, one that turns the production and circulation of texts into the occasion for rethinking the impact of the Cold War on the Korean peninsula and its diaspora. Upending the conventional view of the Korean division as one of separation and antagonism between two diametrically opposed and mutually exclusive cultural spheres, the book reveals how North and South Korean literature surreptitiously formed and transformed each other through the Korean diaspora in Japan. Following the circuit of Korean texts via Japan from 1945 until the 1980s, Kief uncovers the creative ways that writers, critics, and intellectuals crossed the boundaries of nation, language, ideology, and genre to challenge Cold War entrenchments. This required tracking not only Korean language texts, but also Japanese language ones, often published in obscure journals, painstakingly gathered from multiple archives through rigorous research employing cross-disciplinary tools and methods. The result is a work that changes not only what we know about Cold War Korean literature, but also how we might write cultural and intellectual history when the nation-state is no longer assumed to be its natural container. An award ceremony celebrating Professor Kief’s achievement will be held at UC Berkeley on Thursday, March 4, 2027. Established in 2022 to honor Berkeley Political Science Professor and longtime CKS Chair Hong Yung Lee (1939-2017), each year this award and its $10,000 prize recognizes a groundbreaking, English-language academic monograph that advances Korean Studies by combining scholarly merit, research prowess, and methodological innovation. The award recognizes Professor Lee's enduring influence on Korean Studies, but also commitment to situating the field in a broad intellectual landscape. The Center for Korean Studies at UC Berkeley is deeply grateful to all of the authors and publishers who participated in this year’s competition. We would also like to thank Berkeley’s Korean Studies faculty for participating in the first-round selection process; and especially this year’s external second-round review committee: Suzy Kim (Rutgers), Sujung Kim (Hopkins), and Youngju Ryu (Michigan). She explores how cultural understandings of police legitimacy, knowledge of the auxiliary police system, and collective memories of past repression helped shape cooperation between protesters and law enforcement. *About the Speaker* Dr. Junghyun Nam is an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and a research affiliate at the Movement Engaged Hub, both at George Mason University. She is currently working on a book project that examines the emergence of civility as a normative-regulatory system and its influence on boundary-work within protest events. She is also coordinating a collaborative working paper project on data center development and community resistance in the United States. Her work has been published in Mobilization: An International Quarterly. The Korean Studies Research Network (KoRN) aims to bring together scholars whose research focuses on Korea-related topics and to provide mentoring to emerging scholars. It serves as a platform for collaborative and interdisciplinary research among scholars and graduate students at the University of Iowa and other institutions across the Midwest through seminars, speaker series, and workshops. This event is made possible through generous support from International Programs and The Stanley-University of Iowa Foundation Support Organization at the University of Iowa. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Please note the following hybrid event organised by Monash University Korean Studies Research Hub. Many thanks, Sandy ____________ Monash University Korean Studies Research Hub presents the 2027 Korean Studies Research Session for Teaching and Technology: “How I AI” Short talks on how we use AI in our teaching and research Monash University, Clayton Campus (hybrid in-person and online), room TBA Tuesday 23rd February 2027, 1-5pm We invite registrations for How I AI, a half-day workshop hosted by the Monash University Korean Studies Research Hub (MUKSRH). The event will provide an informal forum for colleagues to share the different ways they are using AI in their research, teaching, administration, and other aspects of their academic work. The event is open to staff and students in any discipline at Monash, as well as Korean Studies researchers across Australia who can join via Zoom. Rather than conventional conference presentations, How I AI will feature short, informal show-and-tell talks of around 5–10 minutes focused on the use of AI in teaching and research. Contributions might demonstrate innovative approaches to incorporating AI in learning activities and assessments, ways to use AI to design teaching activities, or showing how AI is being used to support research processes such as data analysis, literature review or writing. The aim is to share practical ideas, approaches and experiences, and to spark discussion about the possibilities and challenges of using AI in Korean Studies and beyond. We welcome contributions from colleagues at all stages of their experience with AI. You might be an enthusiastic adopter, a cautious experimenter, or somewhere in between. You don't need to be an AI expert: if you've found a useful way of doing something with AI, we'd love to hear about it. The event will be held in hybrid mode. Each contribution will be approximately 5–10 minutes, and there will also be time for discussion and questions. We particularly encourage contributors to show rather than tell where possible, for example, by demonstrating a tool, workflow, prompt, or example of AI-generated output. To register, please submit the form linked here . We encourage all registrants to consider contributing a short talk (5-10 minutes), but this is not required. The form asks for the following information: - Name - Affiliation - Title of contribution - Two-sentence description of the contribution - Preferred mode of attendance (in-person; online)* *Note that online participation is primarily designed for those joining from out of state. Participants in the Melbourne area are generally expected to attend in person. Registration closes on 30th October 2026. _______________________ Kind Regards, Sandy Nguyen *MUKSRH Coordinator* Website: Monash Korean Studies Research Hub Facebook: MonashUniKorean Twitter: @MonashUniKorean -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In addition to one review essay and three book reviews, the Fall issue features six research articles: Two studies reexamine hierarchies in the past: one shows how Joseon women of all classes shaped commerce in official and periodic markets, where status, gender regulations, and the commodity economy intersected. The other replaces a Tokyo-versus-Government-General model of Japanese colonial rule with an account of competing imperial institutions and strategies. Two articles question dominant frameworks of value and expertise: one links premodern copy-makers and craftsmen with the 1990s Art Tech Group through a model of art that joins creation, skill, material practice, and collective knowledge. The other shows how Dorothea Sich's work in 1970s rural South Korea challenged Western-centered development by emphasizing medical pluralism and local health practices. The issue also examines the New Right, whose late-1980s origins reveal a failed attempt to break convincingly with the old conservative establishment, and the role of Vietnamese religious practices in Vietnam War fiction by Bảo Ninh, Tim O'Brien, and Hwang Sok-yong, who use them to expose war's violence, mourn its victims, and challenge the ideologies that justify it. Thank you so much for your help! Namhee Fostering Korean Studies is possible by drawing the attention of colleagues with adequate research interests and qualifications (modern Korean history, ideally with a view on its interconnectedness with China) to the following job advertisement (or by answering to it yourself, if you feel qualified). Please note that the deadline is already next week! You can also help by posting this on the bulletin boards (physical and/or digital) in your department (perhaps highlighting the deadline as well as the Korean Studies part as I have done here). If you happen to have a Chinese Studies background with documented linguistic and research skills in Korean and Korean history, you are also welcome to apply. As will become clear from the advertisement and our name (Center of Asian and Transcultural Studies, CATS) we generally value a *transcultural* perspective. For this, it is imperative that we strengthen our Korean expertise. So we hope for your support, if you value either Korean Studies globally or us (or both). With best regards, Enno Giele *https://adb.zuv.uni-heidelberg.de/info/INFO_FDB$.startup?MODUL=LS&SESSID=0&M1=1&M2=0&M3=0&PRO=40092* *English version:* The Center for East Asian Studies at Heidelberg University invites applications for a *Professorship** in “Culture and History of China in the Context of East Asia - with a **focus on Korea**” (f/m/d)* Full Professorship (W3) or Tenure Track Professorship (W1 to W3) to be filled as early as possible. Candidates are expected to represent the field of Sinology with a focus on modern history and China’s interconnectedness with East Asia—particularly with the states and cultures on the Korean Peninsula. Research and teaching should center on historically informed examinations of East Asian dynamics, which have been significantly shaped by China. Methodologically, the position requires an empirical foundation and culturally sensitive analysis of source materials in the original languages (Chinese and Korean) regarding Sino-Korean exchange relations. Successful candidates should possess an international reputation and established networks in the fields of Sinology and/or Korean Studies, evidenced by a strong publication record and a proven track record in securing external funding. In addition, we expect applicants to be willing to participate actively in interdisciplinary collaborative research projects. Applicants will be evaluated according to their career status and in consideration of their individual career paths. This determines whether the position will be filled at salary grade W3 or W1 (junior professorship with a tenure track to W3). In accordance with Article 51 and 51b Higher Education Act of the state Baden-Württemberg, the appointment to a tenure track professorship (W1) requires a completed degree, an excellent doctorate, and pedagogical aptitude which has generally been proven through teaching experience. If you spent time employed as a research assistant (before or after your doctorate), this employment and the period of your doctoral studies combined should not exceed six years. The Tenure Track Professorship (junior professorship, salary grade W1) will usually be limited to six years and, following a positive tenure evaluation, will be converted to a permanent full professorship (salary grade W3). The provisions of the evaluation statutes for junior professorships apply *www.uni-heidelberg.de/en/research/support-for-early-career-researchers/career-paths-following-a-doctorate/tenure-track-professors-and-junior-professors* . The appointment to a full professorship (W3) additionally requires a Habilitation, a successfully evaluated junior professorship or equivalent qualifications (Article 47 (2), Higher Education Act). The application deadline is *October 16, 2026*. Please send your application—consolidated into a single PDF file—containing your CV, academic background, an outline of current and planned research, a list of publications and teaching experience, and a teaching statement to the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, Heidelberg University, Voßstr. 2 , Gebäude 37, 69115 Heidelberg, E-mail: *philosophische.fakultaet at uni-heidelberg.de* Heidelberg University stands for equal opportunities and diversity. Dear colleagues, I am a senior research fellow at STEPI in Seoul and serve on the editorial board of the Global Issue Brief, a review journal of the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences (NRC), the umbrella body for Korea's 26 government-funded policy research institutes. We are preparing a special issue, "Why/How Korea?", for December 2026 or January 2027. Its premise is that Korea's success and its discontents grew from the same root: the institutions behind compressed growth also produced the world's lowest fertility rate, a deeply dual labour market, and a population that rates its own life far below what outsiders expect. Fifteen review essays, each framed as a Why/How question, will examine both sides. The current list, in brief: Part 1, Success: manufacturing and new industries together; world-leading human capital; fast, affordable infrastructure; rapid adoption of advanced institutions; growth despite resource and geopolitical constraints; a non-Western culture entering the global mainstream. Part 2, Discontents: the persistent dual labour market; unhappiness amid outside praise; reliance on penal measures for social problems; a weak security strategy relative to economic stature; institutions that change faster than behaviour. Part 3, Lessons: is compressed growth replicable; how Korea escaped the middle-income trap and at what cost; what developing countries should emulate and avoid. My request: tell me, in one or two sentences beginning with "Why" or "How", the question about Korea you most want answered, whether from this list or your own. The questions we receive will open the issue as "The questions the world is asking about Korea", with credit to contributors unless you prefer otherwise. Please reply off-list to kskwan at stepi.re.kr. A full outline is available on request. This year's conference marks a major milestone, celebrating a decade of collaborative research, scholarly dialogue, and institutional growth in European social science perspectives on contemporary Korea. Since its inception, SoKEN has served as a vital interdisciplinary platform for critical inquiry into the social, political, and cultural dynamics shaping the Korean Peninsula. *Conference Theme* As we reflect on ten years of vibrant academic community-building, the 10th-anniversary conference offers an opportunity to commemorate our shared progress and a forum for confronting some of the most pressing socio-political phenomena of our time. Under the central theme "Shadows of Suspicion in Contemporary Korea: Politics, Media, and Everyday Discourse," SoKEN 2027 invites scholars from around the globe to critically examine how conspiracy narratives, digital media ecosystems, and institutional mistrust intersect with the fabric of everyday life in contemporary Korea. *Scope and Topics* While the primary thematic focus of this milestone 10th-anniversary conference is on how conspiracy theories, disinformation, and narrative mistrust manifest across South Korean politics, digital media ecosystems, and everyday socio-cultural interactions, submissions are not limited to this central theme. We also welcome submissions of research papers that compare cases between Europe and South Korea, as well as between South Korea and other East Asian countries. We strongly encourage and welcome panel and paper proposals on any social science topic related to contemporary Korean society, including sociology, political science, anthropology, communication, media studies, economics, and international relations. *Eligibility* The conference warmly welcomes submissions from young scholars, PhD students, and established academics. It does not provide visa support. Participants are responsible for arranging their own travel documents. *Funding Support* Participants whose papers are accepted will be offered up to two nights' accommodation in Turku. In addition, modest travel funding may be available, subject to budget availability. *Panel Guidelines* - *Panel Priority:* Panel organisation receives priority consideration for acceptance. - *Panel Composition:* Each panel is strictly limited to a *maximum of 4 members* (presenters). *Submission Guidelines* 1. In this session, Peter Shapinsky (Professor, University of Illinois) will share his thoughts on the first waves of Waegu piracy in East Asia: In this presentation I offer some initial thoughts about debates surrounding the so-called first wave of Waegu, Japanese pirates that laid waste to Koryŏ Korea and raided late Yuan and early Ming China between 1350 and 1420. I address debates about the bases, organization, and scale of the Waegu by exploring possible connections between the piracy and “solidarities” (ikki) of Kyushu. A horizontal form of local organization, Ikki comprised villages, allied military families, or a single lineage based in specific locales. Ikki codified collective decision-making through ritual oath-taking to protect or enhance the economic and territorial privileges of members; they mediated conflict resolution and negotiations with overlords. Solidarities flourished during Japan’s long civil war of 1336-1392 in which warlords backed competing imperial claimants and sought to establish hegemony over the archipelago. Ikki proved useful to warlords to harness local support for military campaigns that crisscrossed Kyushu and its sea-lanes, opening potential avenues for raids across the seas. This civil war thus fueled the fourteenth-century wave of piracy, whose participants hailed from Tsushima, Iki, and the northern Kyushu region known as Matsura. Many of the Iki and Matsura participants drew from several solidarities of Kyushu enmeshed in the civil war. Although often described in EuroAmerican scholarship as ephemeral organizations that succumbed to hierarchical warrior lordship, many of the solidarities of Kyushu villages and warriors proved durable politically, judicially, and militarily.
