Dear Scholar, Colleague,
We would like to introduce a new book from AKS Press that traces how imperial Japan came to regard Korean cattle as a resource and incorporated them into the colonial economy.
This book seeks to address a fundamental question: “How did Korean cattle become a resource of the Japanese empire?” Covering the period from the 1890s to the 1910s, it examines the distribution, quarantine, and military use of Korean cattle from the perspective of resource history, shedding light not only on the involvement of commercial capital and state power but also on the everyday activities and responses of Korean farmers.
This is a complete Korean translation of 帝國日本と朝鮮牛: 畜産資源の確保と植民地化 (Imperial Japan and Korean Cattle: Securing Livestock Resources and Colonization), originally published in Japan by Koyo Shobo in 2023. It is part of the AKS Translation Series.
In particular, this Korean edition makes a pioneering study of Korean cattle as a resource accessible to a wider range of scholars and readers. We expect it to be utilized in various fields, including colonial economic history, the history of East Asian exchange, and regional studies linking Korea with western Japan, such as Yamaguchi and Hiroshima Prefectures.
Sincerely,
Wonki Kim
