Dear List,

I just wanted to share the following news which I have recently learned in
the Washington area.

1. On November 9, 1998, there was a ceremony for the opening of the new
Tosan An Ch'angho Memorial Hall (Tosan An Ch'angho Kinyomgwan) at the Tosan
Park in Sinsadong, Kangnamgu, of Seoul. A three-floor building, it houses
documents on the life and thought of An, in addition to an audio-visual
room. To commemorate the 120th anniversary of his birth and 60th
anniversary of his death year, this was made possible by the fund-raising
of Korean-Americans abroad and Koreans at home in the past years. The
event was attended by over 500 guests, including the current and former
prime ministers and other leaders, among others.

For those of you interested and can visit in Seoul, there is a memorial
ceremony every year on his death day in March at the Tosan Park. For
further information, you can contact the Hungsadan at Tongsungdong.

2. Maybe some of you have already heard this. For those who have not, a
Korean-American, Harold Hongjoo Koh has been appointed an assistant
secretary of human rights for the State Department. A son of the late
Prof. Koh Kwangrim and Prof. Chon Hesung who have done much for development
of Korean Studies, this is the first cabinet appointment for a
Korean-American in the country.

Thanks to all those who made it possible,
Jacqueline Pak
