Greetings,

It should probably be noted on this Korean Studies page that one of the
greatest Koreans of our century has died. I did not know her well, although
I claim the privilege of having met her a few times, but I knew her
accomplishments.
I thought it should be noted for those who may not have seen it in the
news, and
memorialized here briefly for all of us. She was a remarkable person.

	From the news services......

First Korean female lawyer Lee Tai-young dead at 84
Lee Tai-young, the nation's first female lawyer, died of old
age yesterday at her home in Pongwon-dong, western Seoul, at the age of 84.
Lee, who devoted her entire life to championing the rights of Korean women,
was often called "godmother" at women's circle meetings here. Born in 1914
in Unsan, North Pyongan Province in North Korea, Lee's father died when she
was just one-year-old. However, her mother, a strong advocate of education,
sent Lee to study at Ewha Womans University, where Lee graduated in 1936 as
one of the school's best students.
