is there anyone familiar with both Korean literature and

BOOK SURVEYING KOREAN AMERICAN LITERATURE

This call for papers invites submissions for Part Two of the
first ever book on Korean American (KA) novelists and their
novels. This book is not an anthology, and is tentatively
titled, "A Guide to Korean American Literature (Volume 1):
The Novels" (short fiction, poetry, and drama will be
included in the next volume).

Part One of the book will create a testimony to each KA novelist
through individual chapters that will be part biography, part
literary analysis, and part interview. It will bring together
all the materials previously available into this one convenient
source, as well as contain new information on the novelists'
lives and the story behind the writing of each novel. The
novelists will share their thoughts on KA literature and their
novels, and offer specific advice to young writers and students.

Submissions for Part Two of the book will document the
development of KA literature through chapters on various
topics on KA literature written by professors, graduate
students, and journalists. Topics to be considered include,
but are not limited to:
- the historical development of KA Studies
- KA literature - past (pre-80s), present (90s), future
- KA literature and Korean literature
- KA literature and Asian American literature
- KA literature and Women's Studies and feminism
- KA literature and Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual Studies
- limitations of (semi)autobiography as KA novel/fiction form
- KA novels versus short fiction, poetry, and plays
- the immigrant experience, the Han
- the description of class issues, F.O.B. versus 1.5 generation
- hapa/mixed descent community, Korean adoptees
- journalists as novelists

Please note while the book is intended to become a valuable
resource on KA literature for high school and college students,
the tone and language of the submissions should also strive
to be appropriate for casual, general readers who may be
just beginning to learn about KA literature.

While the deadline is March 1, 1999 for the paper, <500 word
abstract, and <500 word biographical note. Before writing,
please email topic to confirm appropriateness of selection.

Please send submissions to Henry Kim, MD
