Given the current controversy around the work of Choi jang Jip I thought
there might possibly be some interest in the following
(English-language) citations:

1) Choi, J.J. "A Comparative Study of Civil Society and Democracy in
Japan and Korea" (VRF Series #295, Institute of Developing Economies,
Tokyo, March 1997).
N.B. This reference was provided to me by the late Professor James West
(Harvard University). Professor West described it as, "a good analysis
of [the post 1991] reconfiguration in social movements" in Korea.

2) Choi, J.J. "Political Cleavages in South Korea" in, Hagen Koo, (ed.)
State and Society in Contemporary Korea (Ithaca, NY: Cornell University
Press, 1993).
