[KS] Colonial-era Japanese writer on `HAN' ??

Was recently talking with a friend about `han', that much-
bruited `essential Korean emotion'.  She mentioned that one of
the earlier and more influential formulations of the notion
came from a Japanese writer during the colonial era.  This was
interesting news to me, but unfortunately, she was unable to
supply the name of the Japanese writer, much less any
bibliographic references.  Is there anyone on the list who
can??
