Dear Colleagues:

For the second year, the KAEC has advertised, among its Fulbright grant
opportunities, for two people in the "lecturer/researcher" category. =
This
category is Korean faculty members who will be screened and partly=20
funded by KAEC to go teach (and do some research) in the U.S. for
the academic year 1999-2000. Specifically, our announcement
called for applicants who could teach some aspect of Korean studies,
broadly considered, and who could teach it in English.

Our application deadline passed and now we are to the point of
screening applicants. There are quite a number - literature, =
linguistics,
business, economics, sociology, law, urban/regional planning, and
industrial design. These are applicants, of course, not yet screened.
Any given field may end up with no one "qualified." But just as the
American Fulbright lecturers are first selected in the U.S. and then
have to be "sold" to the Korean universities, so the Korean lecturers
are first selected and then somebody - CIES in principle - has to find
universities that want them. Last year we had some difficulty in
placing our two lecturers.

It seems to me that there would be some value in knowing what the
demand is out there, if any. It might (might) even be possible to have
some influence on the selection based on the knowledge of the need -
if there is need for a literature teacher we might get one selected
rather than an economist. Of course, selection is made by screening
committees, the Board, and ultimately by the Fulbright BFS in
Washington, but the information would at least be useful.

Does anyone know of any university departments which might wish
a one-year appointment (1999-2000) to teach something, one or
(preferably) two courses per term, about Korea? If so, please let
me know as soon as possible. If you do not know yourself
for sure but you know of someone or some other department
who MIGHT be looking (but is not represented on the Korean-Studies
Listserv), please tell me the email and I will contact that person or
department directly (i.e. please respond even if you are not located
in the United States!)

I have felt for some years that it was unbalanced for Fulbright to be
sending American faculty to teach in Korea but not Korean faculty to
teach in America. Now we are doing it both ways, and need your
assistance and information. Please help us make it work!
