Dear List,

One issue that hasn't been discussed much regarding romanization is the
possibility of computer programs that allow users to transform hangul into
romanized Korean and reverse. In 1995, _Hangul Sae Soshik_ (#270 p. 26)
reported that the Ministry of Culture and Sports (the name at that time)
developed such a program for DOS, which can be downloaded at the following
URL: http://myhome.shinbiro.com/~jusena/page/jaryo.html (I have not tried it
yet). I have enclosed a copy of the article with this message. Prof. Kang
Beom-mo at Korea University also developed a romanization program for DOS in
the early to mid-1990s. There may be other programs out there. The Prof.
Kang program does a fairly good job for the Yale system, but I don't know
about the Ministry of Culture program. A convenient and accessible program
would make producing romanization much easier for everybody and encourage
greater standardization. The possibility of such a development should be
factored into the debate.

With best wishes,

Bob Fouser
