Dear friends Koreanists,

An ancient and well established institution in Florence (Gabinetto
Vieusseux) is currently creating with my collaboration a new "Centre of
Eastern studies", following an important bibliographical acquisition by its
library [the books and pictorial archive of the famous florentine nipponist
Fosco Maraini]. Our concern will be the studies of all the Asiatic
countries, ranging from Japan to India. This initiative is important, since
it is the only one in Tuscany (the region of Florence) dealing with East
Asia, in the private, public, and academic fields (Gabinetto Vieusseux is a
semi-Municipal and semi-University Institution).

Korea will obviously be a  relevant chapter in the activities of the Centre
whose concern will be the organization of congresses, the institution of a
Library on Asian topics, the establishment of research projects, the
coordination of East Asian studies at regional, national and international
levels.

I am enclosing two files in word 7: the first is a brief memorandum and
statement of
intent, the second is the program of an International conference (Firenze,
il Giappone e l'Asia orientale) that has recently been held in Florence
with a great success (I am sorry, but the text is in Italian. I trust the
linguistic capacities of all Koreanists...).
