Dear Andrea,
The late Charles HAGUENAUER (1886-1976) wrote a series of three
articles on the origin of the name Corea-Korea. Arab merchants had handed
over a name to the Portuguese, who romanized it as "Gores". Haguenauer sees
in "Gores" a derivation from "Koryo". See:
        - "Les Gores", in Bulletin de la Maison franco-japonaise, II, 3-4,
Tokyo, 1930, pp. 13-25.
        - "Encore la question des Gores", Journal asiatique, janvier-mars 1935.
        - "Les Gores, mise au point", Journal asiatique, 1936, pp. 392-395.
Good luck.

Ciao. Daniel BOUCHEZ <bouchez at ext.jussieu.fr>
