[KS] Help!

Dear All,
Does anyone have any idea concerning the root of the word go-saeng?  I am 
wondering how did the word come about and how did it come to have the 
meaning, feeling, and "heart" in which Korean people use to describe their 
particular hardships, whether it be emotional, mental, physical, economical 
or even the smallest forms of self-exertion?
I would sincerely appreciate any information, opinions, thoughts, or 
academic works in which I can refer to.  Thank you very much.
