FULBRIGHT FORUM!!

Fulbright in Seoul (the Korean American Educational Commission) is pleased
to invite you to attend the Fulbright Forum for December, which will be
held on Thursday, December 14, 2000, at 6:30 p.m. at the Commission
offices in Mapo.

The topic this month is "Negotiated Reunion: Separated Families and Personal
Legacies of Korean Division." The speaker is Young Nan Kim, Ph.D. candidate
in anthropology at Berkeley, who is in Korea as a Fulbright grantee doing
dissertation research on separated families.

The dramatic and emotional meetings by North-South Korean family members
have brought renewed attention to the ongoing humanitarian dilemma of
separated Korean families. As meetings between close kin after 50 years,
the reunions are being emotionally invested with hope and a sense of
release, as well as great frustration and sorrow. As a concrete result of
the June summit meeting, the reunions are also as politically significant as
they are sensitive, proving to be a barometer of public opinion toward
inter-Korean relations. This presentation offers part of a
study-in-progress, exploring some of the personal stories, historical
background, and political context surrounding these reunions.

We welcome to the Forum all Fulbrighters, senior lecturers and junior
researchers, as well as Board Members, Fulbright alumni, Peace Corps
alumni, Korean studies scholars, foreign graduate students, and other
friends of Korea and members of the Fulbright family.

This Forum is the last event of Fulbright Korea's busy 50th Anniversary
Year. The presentation will be followed by a "Christmas and New Year"
reception. We hope many friends will come to enjoy the lecture, the
discussion, and the good food and drink.
