Lecture
The Future of the Japan-Korea Relationship
June 28; 6:30pm
Japan Society, 333 East 47th Street, NYC
The current climate of rapprochement between Japan and South Korea owes
much to bold initiatives of the past two years by Republic of Korea
President Kim Dae-jung and the late Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi.
Those initiatives have gone a long way in overcoming emotional barriers to
greater cooperation on the political, economic, cultural and security
fronts between the two countries. Still, at the threshold of a new century,
many issues remain, including what kind of role Japan will play in the
security of the region and the impact a unified Korea would have on the
relationships among Japan, Korea and the United States. In the more
immediate term, political uncertainty in Japan, following the death of
Prime Minister Obuchi, remains to be played out. The prospects for the
Korea-Japan partnership in the 21st century will be explored by a panel of
distinguished experts: Donald P. Gregg, president and chairman, The Korea
Society; Amb. Takekazu Kawamura, the Japanese Consul General in New York;
Kim Kyung Won, president, Institute of Social Sciences; and Michael K.
Young, dean and professor of law, The George Washington University Law
School. William Clark, Jr., president, Japan Society, will preside.
Co-sponsored by the Japan Society. Fee: $10 (member); $8 (non-member); $5
(student). For further information or to RSVP, contact Richard Hitchcock at
