Mmmm... I had rather hoped we might get a spirited reply from Cambridge
about this. I suppose that one may come, but I am not sure from whom,
since on searching the Web I get the impression that we are dealing with
a ghost. There is a note on the page of the Faculty of Oriental Studies
Library that says: "The Faculty also has plans for the establishment of
an East Asia Institute. The Institute will house three separate
specialists centres for Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Each centre will
focus on both historic and modern cultures and languages within each
country. For further information on the East Asia Institute please
contact Ms Sophia Oliver-Dansie or Mrs Elizabeth Henderson at the
Development Office." Further searching reveals that these charming young
persons are 'Fundraising Executives' on the University Development
Office Staff. The Development Office, we learn, "is the operational arm
of The Cambridge Foundation, the charity that fund-raises on behalf of
the University of Cambridge."

There was an article in the University's newletter of April 1999
anouncing the "first Advisory Committee meeting" for the EA Institute in
March 1999 but it would seem that there has not yet been a second. None
has been reported.

Yet it seems a wealthy ghost. That same article tells us that "Over the
last five to ten years, funding for the Institute has come mainly from
Japan. The largest donation was the gift of £3 million for the Aoi
Pavilion extension to the University Library. But Chinese sources have
recently given generously..."

Yet the 'East Asia Institute' would seem to have no institutional
academic existence, no Director, no program, no building, no staff, no
Web page. It is only a hyped image in a fund-raiser's brochure. I hope
that the Blue House realizes that.
