I concur with everything which has been said by Prof. Pratt of
Durham and Dr. Pak of SOAS, London about the proposed Kim
Dae-jung Centre for Korean Studies at Cambridge. Funding for
Korean Studies in the UK should be concentrated in those
institutions which already have well established programmes - such
as here at Sheffield, in London, or at Oxford - and not further
dispersed to new institutions. It is also surprising that Cambridge
should be chosen for this largesse because there is no programme
of Korean Studies there at all, and their library representative no
longer attends meetings of the library co-ordinating body, the Korea
Library Group, because the collection is so small. I am deeply upset
that political considerations seem to have overridden commonsense
in planning for the development of our field of study.
