Dr. Cook was a very prominent figure on the Seoul expat scene in the
1960s and early 1970s (and perhaps earlier), and a pillar of the local Royal
Asiatic Society chapter. He was instantly recognizable, with his ruddy
complexion, full red beard, and gregarious, big-hearted nature. He headed
the American Trading Company's office in Seoul, but his true passion was for
Korean history. According to Sue Bae at the RAS, Dr. Cook left Korea around
1972, worked in Japan with Prentice-Hall publishers, and later returned to
the States. He is now retired and living in Uxbridge, Mass. Sue estimated
he is in his early 70s, but said his health has not been good in recent
years. Sue gave me his home address and, while I hesitate to post it in a
public venue, I will forward it separately to anyone interested in
contacting him.
Dr. Cook's daughter Alice Cook joined the U.S. foreign service in the
1970s, and is still a diplomat, serving recently (and perhaps still) in
Bangkok.
