Please join us at 4:00 p.m. this Thursday, October 26, 2000 in Gates-Blake
414 for the University of Chicago Ethnomusicology Workshop (EthNoise).
Nathan Hesselink, lecturer in Ethnomusicology at Illinois State
University, will present "South Korean P'ungmul (percussion band music &
dance): towards a truly democratic music."

Dr. Hesselink, a recent graduate in Ethnomusicology at the University of
London's School of Oriental and African Studies, has published widely on
the traditional and popular musics of Korea and Japan (where he was
raised). Dr. Hesselink's ongoing research focuses on the Korean percussion
ensemble tradition known by the names of p'ungmul/nongak, in both its
urban and rural settings. His initial training in Korean percussion took
place at the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts
(Kungnip kugagwon) in Seoul. During his doctoral fieldwork period in North
Cholla province he studied with the renowned drummer and 'human cultural
asset' Kim Hyongsun of Iri Nongak. He was the first foreigner in Korea to
perform with a nationally designated cultural asset team.
