[KS] Re: On the Korean university system

I am very interested in studies of the Korean university system, and I would
like to keep in touch about this topic.  However, one thing was said in the
original post which struck me as possibly incorrect.  The posting said, "The
ranking of universities is not the outcome of any measurable competition
process."  However, I had always understood that the fairly precise ranking
of universities in Korea was based on the difficulty of undergraduate
admission, i.e. based on the score on the college entrance examination
required to be admitted.  Now, that score varied from department to
department, so the "average" may be a subjective construct, and the scores
are not "officially" publicized, but the rankings are still widely known
among high school seniors and DO change over time (albeit slowly) as I
understand it.  I wonder if anyone on the list, particularly those with
relatives who have recently entered a Korean university as undergraduates,
can confirm my understanding of this ranking system.

I also would have wanted to add to the list of the problems of Korean higher
education the following:

1) generally low expectations that professors put on students - little
reading and little writing and little research is demanded of
undergraduates.
2) independent learning is unlikely to be developed until universities have
libraries with enough books and enough budget to support student work.
3) ultimately, university tuition (at private universities) is far too
cheap, in comparison with the national economy or per capita GDP, putting a
permanent limitation on the ability of the system to deliver a quality
education.
