I don't think anyone has posted a notice pointing out that there will be
a massive gathering of literary figures in Seoul this coming week
(September 26-8). "Writing across boundaries: Literature in the
multicultural world" with Wole Soyinka, Gary Snyder, Pierre Bourdieu,
Ismail Kadare, Elaine H. Kim, Zhang Yiwu, Masao Miyoshi, Margaret
Drabble, Jacque Roubaud, Uwe Kolbe, Raphael Confiant and I have omitted
some will be submerged in a flood tide of big Korean names: Ko Un, Lee
Ch'ong-Jun, Yi Mun-Yol, Kim Ji-Ha, Hwang Dong-Kyu, Park Wan-So, So
Jong-in, Shin Kyong-Suk... and many other writers and academics. Events
are mostly at the Sejong Cultural Centre. The full program is at
http://www.daesan.or.kr/english/seoul_forum/seoul_02.html and the daily
4pm special lectures on the 10th floor of Kyobo Building may prove to be
the most interesting part, less hemmed in with discussants and academic
formalities. On Friday 29th, Gary Snyder will be joined by Ko Un for a
joint program of readings.
Entry is free. All Korean papers have been translated into English and
vice-versa.
It should make a change from the Olympics; though extreme excitement is
not guaranteed.
