Dear Colleagues,

You are cordially invited to the 7th Hahn Moo-Sook Colloquium in the
Korean
Humanities at The George Washington University, on Saturday, October 21,
2000,
from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The meeting takes place at the Academic
Center
(Rome Hall 459), 22nd and I Streets, NW, Washington, DC. The topic is
"Christianity in Korea."

Don Baker of the University of British Columbia and Chai-sik Chung of
Boston
University School of Theology will speak on Christianity, the most
recent
transforming force in Korea, which first appeared on the Korean
peninsula a
little more than two centuries ago. The long-term impact of
Christianity is
still being assessed. Baker will argue that Christianity is partially
responsible for the separation of church and state which is essential
for the
growth of a civil society. Chung will discuss the crisis in values the
people
of Korea face after a century of rapid political, social, and economic
change,
which he believes Christianity in Korea must do more to resolve. Bonnie
Oh of
Georgetown University and Harry Yeide of The George Washington
University will
deliver commentaries following the lectures. The program is preceded by
coffee and pastry and followed by a Korean buffet lunch. It is free and
open
to the public, but reservations are required. For more information,
visit our
website

Hope to see many of you there.

Richard R. Grinker [rgrink at gwu.edu] and Young-Key Kim-Renaud
[kimrenau at gwu.edu],
Conveners
