THE KOREA SOCIETY'S KOREAN LANGUAGE PROGRAM
Placing equal emphasis on speaking, listening, reading and writing, the
language program's balanced and thorough approach instills the student
with greater understanding and appreciation for Korean culture. Korean
language courses extend over a term of twelve sessions. Instructors are
experienced Korean language teachers with university affiliations. Class
size* is limited to ten or fewer students to allow more interaction with
the instructor and other students.Courses extend over a term of twelve
sessions and are held at The Korea Society's offices.
Textbooks are available at The Korea Society and are offered to students
at discounted prices.
Fee: $350 Members / $375 Non Members
Classes are available at 6 sequential levels:
BASIC KOREAN
Instructor: Shin-Hark Suk
For individuals who have limited or no prior knowledge of Korean, this
course introduces common expressions and vocabulary used in greetings,
dining and other daily routines. Students learn the Korean alphabet,
elementary sentence structure and pronunciation.
BEGINNING I
Instructor: Shin-Hark Suk
Beginning I covers conversation, vocabulary and basic sentence structure.
Instructor-guided discussion and role play will be used to encourage and
promote speaking.
BEGINNING II
Instructor: Shin-Hark Suk
This course prepares students for intermediate level language study,
polishing skills learned in the beginning levels. Emphasis is placed on
expanding vocabulary and improving speaking and listening skills.
Students progress towards fluency in basic language structures used in
everyday conversations.
INTERMEDIATE
Instructor: Kyungah Yoon
For those with a basic fluency in Korean, this course will help students
learn, practice and use more complex language structures and sharpen
vocabulary and conversation skills. Students will be encouraged to read
and write short passages and keep a journal. Conversation will focus on
current events and real-life situations. Students will develop an
understanding of Korean culture, people and society.
KOREAN THROUGH FILM - NEW COURSE!!!
Instructor: Kyungah Yoon
This intermediate level course will examine Korean language and culture
focusing on some of the greatest films that have been made in Korea. In
each session, the screening of film will be followed by exercises for
acquiring linguistic competence such as class discussion, storytelling,
role plays, debates and weekly practice in writing. Grammar review as
necessary, as well as work on understanding spoken Korean will be covered.
Conducted in Korean. (Offered during the summer terms only.)
BUSINESS KOREAN
Instructor: Kyungah Yoon
This course focuses on honorific speech forms, readings from publications
(i.e., newspaper articles, essays and short stories), viewing of
audiovisual materials and the use of Korean in the workplace will be
available for more advanced students. This course aims at helping students
develop a higher level of linguistic accuracy and sophistication by
introducing them to nuances and differences of meaning of syntactic
structures in a variety of contexts. The goal is to enable students to
write about and discuss a variety of complex topics using relatively
complex structures upon completion. Some writing assignments.
*The Society reserves the right to cancel any course if sufficient
enrollment is not obtained. In such cases, students already enrolled will
receive full refunds.
