Korean Studies Colloquium at the Academy of Korean Studies

The Academy of Korean Studies is pleased to invite you to attend a
Korean studies colloquium on Wednesday, January 23, 2002, at 3:00
p.m. in the conference room of the administration building (2nd
floor) at the Academy.

The colloquium will be a presentation on "The Narrative Structure of
'Song of the Moon's Reflection on a Thousand Rivers"
[Wôr-in-ch'ôn'gang-ji-gok] by Werner Sasse and followed by comments
from discussants. We welcome all interested scholars, researchers,
and graduate students in Korean studies to this presentation followed
by a reception.

Dr. Werner Sasse is a professor in Korean studies at Hamburg
University, Germany and currently a visiting scholar at the Academy.
His academic interests include the development of early Korean
writing systems and grammar, the future of Korean studies outside of
Korea, and problems of Korean reference materials.

Abstract: Very few studies have been presented on the narrative
structure of "Song of the Moon's Reflection on a Thousand Rivers" and
all seem to overlook that the composition is a "kok", i.e., a piece
of literature to be sung. Focusing on the aspect of a singer singing
to an audience, and basing this research on a text-linguistic
approach, has resulted in uncovering a narrative structure, the
sections of which display a very artistic dramatic inner
sub-structure. Finding this structure shifts attention from a
scene-related structure to a theme-related or subject-related
structure, where theme, and subject are more abstract than the actual
scenes. This lecture will present this methodology and discuss the
structure revealed by this new approach.

We hope to utilize this and future lectures to expand scholarly
dialogue in Korean Studies and welcome contact from individuals
interested in presenting a paper or participating in these colloquia
in the future.
