Position Announcement

Visiting Assistant Professor in Religious Traditions of Korea
Non-Tenure Track

ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY, DEPARTMENT OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES invites
applications for a visiting assistant professor appointment specializing in
the Religious Traditions of Korea.  Through the generosity of the Freeman
Foundation, A.S.U. has received funding to support this appointment for four
years.  The initial term of the appointment is one year, beginning Fall of
2002, with possible annual renewals depending on satisfactory performance,
the needs of the university and funding.  

Required Qualifications:  Applicants must have a research specialization in
at least one of the various Korean religious traditions (Confucianism,
Buddhism, Taoism, Shamanism/Folk Religion, or Christianity) and must also
have graduate training in at least one other of these traditions.
Applicants must have a demonstrated ability to teach: 1) undergraduate
courses in Korean religion and culture; 2) at least one course covering a
tradition as it is found in both Korea and elsewhere (e.g., East Asian
Buddhism, Asian Christianity); and 3) theoretical and thematic courses in
the study of religion.  Other required qualifications:  1) Ph.D. in
Religious Studies or related field by time of hire; 2) Proficiency in Korean
language and other languages necessary for the primary and secondary sources
of the research specialization; and 3) Evidence of teaching effectiveness,
publication, and professional involvement appropriate to development since
time of doctorate.  

Desired Qualifications:  1) Research interests in the interaction among the
various religious traditions of Korea; and 2) Research interests in the
relationships among religion, society, and culture in both pre-modern and
modern Korea.
