Call for Papers
The Third Biennial KSAA Conference
"Korea: Language, Knowledge and Society"
30 June - 1 July 2003
The Australian National University, Canberra

The title we have chosen for this, the Third Biennial Conference of the
Korean Studies Association of Australasia, is "Korea: Language, Knowledge
and Society". The topics and themes pursued at the biennial conferences,
beginning in 1999, are of course determined primarily by the interests of
the KSAA membership, in particular by the research and teaching activities
of those who participate, and we believe this title encompasses these
interests and activities while lending the conference a coherent focus.

A principal objective of those in Korean studies is of course to increase
knowledge and understanding of the language, culture and social
organisation of the people on the Korean peninsula from early to
contemporary times. However, knowledge is a major topic in itself. The
questions of how Koreans have understood, formulated and acquired
knowledge, and how they have applied their knowledge from individual
through national and international levels comprise the overall theme of
this conference.

Knowledge is expressed in and imparted by language, itself a fundamental
element of culture; the quest for knowledge and understanding is central
to the construction of history, production of literature and adherence to
religious and philosophical systems; and the application of knowledge is
the subject of political, economic and other social science inquiries.

Conference panels will be organised according to the major disciplines
belonging to language and linguistics, the humanities and the social
sciences. When submitting abstracts, please indicate the specific
discipline to which it belongs. If you wish to submit an application for a
whole panel, please ensure that abstracts for all panel participants are
included.

The deadline for abstracts is the end of December 2002. Abstracts for
conference presentations are welcomed from anyone involved in Korean
Studies from anywhere in the world, whether a KSAA member or not. Selected
papers will be notified by 31 January 2003.

KSAA is hoping to provide some travel assistance for those who will
present a paper at the conference. Details of assistance will be
determined later based on the number of papers received and available
funding.

Please send your abstracts to Gi-Hyun Shin at ksaaconf03 at anu.edu.au. Visit
