The Great Kanto Earthquake 80th Anniversary Special Exhibition:
THE MASSACRE OF KOREANS THROUGH PAINTINGS
NPO Koryo Museum, Shinjuku, Tokyo, Aug. 20-Oct.14, 2003

Facing the eightieth anniversary of the Great Kanto Earthquake in the
metropolitan Tokyo area this year, the Koryo Museum invites you to a
rare opportunity to explore dynamic social impacts of the post-Earthquake
massacre of Koreans in Japanese society through paintings.Introducing new
findings and recently discovered visual records of the massacre in
Taisho Japan (1912-1926), the Special Exhibition The Massacre of Koreans
through Paintings will open a new space to reconsider the meanings and
consequences of the historical event in the making of modern Japan. The
paintings in exhibition include the original picture scrolls by a young
artist Hakudo, paintings by school children, and watercolor paintings and
sketches by contemporary artists and art students among others. Many of
these works are being exhibited for the first time in the Tokyo area.
The exhibition was covered by NHK, Asahi Shimbun and many other media
reports this week for its significance.

The Museum is located on Shokuan-doori in Shinjuku, Tokyo (5 min walk from
Higashi-Shinjuku station on Oedo line OR 10 min walk from Shin-Okubo station
on Yamanote line). For further information, please contact the museum at
03-5272-3510 in Tokyo (in Japanese) OR email Jin-hee Lee at jlee16 at uiuc.edu
