Another brief heads up for those of you in or near Seoul:
This Sunday Korea's royal Yi clan hold their annual memorial ceremonies
at Seoul's Chongmyo Shrine, between Chongno and Ch'angdok Palace/Secret
Garden, beginning around 9 a.m. For this all-day event, the clan elders
turn out in all their traditional finery; there are ancient (and somber)
Confucian dances -- performed these days by young women, since there is a
shortage of interested young men; and musicians play ancient court
instruments. This is a rare opportunity to see these colorful rituals,
which we often learn about only via the next day's after-the-fact newspaper
coverage.
