The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) seeks a Curatorial Assistant to support the 
activities of the Asian Art department. This position assists the Curator, Asian Art in 
all aspects of the department including collection management, research, maintenance of 
the permanent collection, exhibition coordination and support.

Position requirements include:  B.A. in Art History required; M.A. in Art History with 
emphasis on Korean art preferred.  Sophisticated research and writing skills, strong 
verbal and written communication skills. Foreign language skill required: Fluent in Korean 
(Reading, Writing and Speaking). A minimum of one year museum experience desirable in 
curatorial or research area.

Title:	Curatorial Assistant, Asian Art
Reports To:	Associate Curator, Asian Art
Date Needed:		March 2005
Pay Type:		Salaried, Exempt, Full Time - 35 hours a week

Work Schedule:		Monday - Friday,  9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Responsibilities:

•	Provides curatorial assistance to the Curator, Asian Art department.
•	Duties related to collection management: on-going collection research (ranging from art 
historical to conservation issues); research of new acquisition proposals; establishing 
and maintaining collection files and disseminating information to other departments.
Permanent collection:
•	Assists with maintaining object files, including library reference consultation, 
ordering photographs, coordinating with Publications, Image Library, Design, and other 
departments as required.
•	Schedules the work order requests and coordinates quarterly Asian art gallery paper 
rotation- research and writes didactic and label copy for rotation.

Duties related to exhibitions include:
•	Research; maintenance of files; preparation of loan forms and exhibition checklists; 
preparation of catalogue appendix; coordinating interdepartmental needs and 
responsibilities for upcoming exhibitions and label production.
•	Coordinates the Exhibition Curatorial team meetings.
•	Coordinates travel arrangements for visiting speakers, artists, collectors.
•	Assists with research and writing grant proposals.
•	Prepares and coordinates special mail-outs related to exhibitions or special events.

Duties related to Asian Art Department Subcommittee:
•	Prepares agenda for subcommittee meetings and assists with meeting organization and 
communication.
•	Handles all arrangements for Asian Art sub-committee: reserves meeting room, 
audio-visual equipment, food/beverages, oversees room set-up/clean-up, sends meeting 
notices, prepares agenda packets, takes notes, composes and types minutes, distributes 
minutes.


Duties related to Friends of Asian Art support group:
•	Assists and coordinates Fund Raising events.
•	Prepares guest lists, takes note of RSVPs, and assists with the organization of special 
dinners and events related to exhibitions, symposia, fund-raising, etc.
•	Handles all administrative aspects of Friends of Asian Art, including mailing brochures, 
announcements, notices of events, receiving fees, organizing the group’s events, etc.
•	Maintains and regularly updates the Friends of Asian art mailing list.
•	Performs other duties as necessary to support the curator in all activities related to 
the collection, exhibitions and general office responsibilities.
•	Provides assistant support for curator; types correspondence, reports, scholarly 
articles, checklists, manuscripts, purchase orders.


Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
•	Broad knowledge of Asian Art history (China, Japan, India, Southeast Asia, Tibet and 
Himalayan Art) with an emphasis on Korean Art.
•	Sophisticated research and writing skills are essential. Writing sample required.
•	Strong organization and computer skills (Word, PowerPoint and database application)
•	Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
•	Accurate typing, minimum of 50 wpm.   Foreign language skills required: Fluent in Korean 
(Reading, Writing and Speaking).

Education and Experience:
Minimum of B.A. in Art History required. M.A. in Art History with emphasis on Korean Art 
  preferred. Minimum of one year museum experience desirable in a curatorial or research area.
