The surge in popularity of Korean pop culture, a phenomenon referred to
as the Korean Wave, or hanryu, may be a great source of pride to
Koreans, but foreign corporations are stealing a march on local firms to
exploit the hanryu brand in Asia.
In late September, the multinational personal care products firm Unilever
introduced in Japan a cosmetics line named Han, after Hangook, a Korean
word for Korea, in a package adorned with traditional Korean patterns. .
