Some new publications that might be of interest to members of this list
have come on to my desk:
a) The first volume of a planned series, The Translation Series of the
Korean Christian Classics, published by The Korean Christian Museum at
Soongsil University (511, Sangdo-dong, Dongjak-gu, Seoul 156-743)
containing 1) The Record of a Dream of Yi Byeok 2) A Record of the Words
of Ryu-Han-Dang, 3) Meditation on Life after Death. This is what is
usually termed a "sumptuous" production with various introductions, the
English translations, the Korean originals, and color images of the 3
manuscripts. The second item is especially evocative since it was
written for women by the wife of Yi Byeok, who must have been a
remarkable person (an active translator!) of whom too little is known.
No information about the price.
b) The first volume of the "rejuvenated" Seoul Journal of Korean Studies
(Volume 19 Number 1) published by The Kyujanggak Institute for Korean
Studies at Seoul National University. It is "a peer-reviewed biannual
publication" for all aspects of Korean studies, entirely in English.
Alas, they have failed to include any kind of mailing address, but the
email is seoul.journal at gmail.com
c) Seoul Selection has begun to publish in English a series of volumes
on "Korean Film Directors" with the Korean Film Council. Each volume
includes a critical commentary on one director's work, an extensive
interview, and a filmography. The first 2 volumes are devoted to Kim
Ki-young and to Im Kwon-taek. They are available for online purchase
through Seoul Selection's home page http://www.seoulselection.com/
People in Seoul might want to know that there will be a book launching
for the Im Kwon-taek volume at Seoul Selection bookshop at 4:00pm, April
21 where Im Kwon-taek will be signing copies of the book as well as
holding a Q&A session with participants.
"To the making of books there is no end" indeed, but I wait, so far in
vain, for news of newly published English translations of Korean
literature, and my list
http://hompi.sogang.ac.kr/anthony/TranslationList.htm feels sad at being
bereft of 2007 titles.
