Fulbright Forum
6:30 p.m. on Friday, November 16th, 2007
The Korean-American Educational Commission (the Fulbright Commission in
South Korea) cordially invites you to attend the November Fulbright
Forum to be held at the KAEC Building in Mapo-gu. The Fulbright Forum
serves as a periodic gathering for the Fulbright Family at large,
including past and present grantees and friends of Fulbright.
KAEC is pleased to present Maureen Fleming and Eun Young Choi from the
Seoul Institute of the Arts as guest lecturers for the Fulbright Forum:
"Imagery in Regenerative Movement and Vocal Techniques"
Culminating a free exchange of ideas between cultures and art forms,
Fulbrighter and world dance artist Maureen Fleming along with Professor
and vocalist from the Seoul Institute for the Arts Eun Young Choi will
present research in regenerative movement and vocal techniques that are
initiated through the use of training systems involving delicate and
refined imagery to produce combined movement and vocal flexibility in
performance.
“Fleming Technique” involves the use of an elastic band suspended from a
point 8ft high and attached to the limbs of the practitioner creating
resistance and support. Through original repetitive exercises,
incorporating the “Ten Images” defined by Fleming through her life long
research into imagery underlying regenerative movement, she has
maintained the flexibility needed for her acclaimed performances, which
range from a recent presentation in the Fall for Dance Festival at City
Center in New York City to upcoming performances at the Dong Nang Art
Center in Seoul, Korea. “Fleming Technique” was recently taught at the
Juilliard School.
However, it was during Fleming's Fulbright residency at the Seoul
Institute for the Arts that she was able to research both traditional
Korean vocal techniques and the vocal work of Eun Young Choi who will
join Maureen Fleming in the Fulbright Forum. Through the common ground
of imagery or “mind pictures” driving the use of muscle, both movement
and vocal capacity expand to produce increased capacity in both daily
training and performance.
*Maureen Fleming*, an American choreographer, has gained international
recognition on five continents for her original form of
multi-disciplined performances and educational programs. Fleming invents
surreal movement poetry and explores through metaphorical images our
never-ending search for what is universal about the journey of the soul.
She has performed in Boston’s Institute for Contemporary Art Theater
(2007), Fall for Dance Festival in the New York City Center (2006), the
Dong Nang Arts Center (2006) and many others. She has been on the
faculty of the Juilliard School, NYU Tisch School of the Arts.
Trinity/La MaMa and the Seoul Institute of the Arts. She has received
four awards from National Endowment for the Arts: Creativity, three
fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts in
Choreography/Performance Art, and two awards from Japan Foundation,
Rockefeller Foundation, N.E.F.A. National Dance Project, the National
Performance Network Creation Fund and is the recipient of grants through
the Japan US Creative Artist Commission and the Korea Fulbright
Commission. The New York Times describes her work as “Amazing… a
wondrous choreographic metamorphosis.”
*Eunyoung Choi*, a Korean vocalist, trained in France and completed the
Superieur course in Performance at the National Conservatory of Bobigny
in France (Ecole National de Musique de Bobigny) and completed a DEM in
voice with honors in 2003. Performances include: Haydn's "Creation,"
Music Festival of Bobigny, France (2002); Don Giovanni as Cerlina, Music
Festival in Canal+ Hall, France (2003); Joint recital, Mozart Hall,
Seoul (2004); Solo recital, Ceramic Palace Hall, Seoul (2005) and many
others. She is currently teaching voice at the Seoul Institute of the
Arts in Korea.
