Kyujanggak Korean Studies Colloquium
Thursday November 29, 2007, 4-6 pm

Title: History or Hagiography? Stelae Inscriptions of Koryŏ Monks
Speaker: Sem Vermeersch (Kyujanggak Fellow)
Location: Kyujanggak Seminar Room 201, Kyujanggak Institute for Korean
Studies (Bldg 103)
Seoul National University

Description: Investigating the value of the stelae as sources for the
history of Korean Buddhism, Sem Vermeersch offers an overview of the
main features of biographic stele inscriptions for eminent monks of
the Koryŏ period. Though the fifty or so remaining texts are well
known, this is the first attempt at critically evaluating the contents
or presentation of the inscriptions and at delineating the conventions
of this genre. Dr. Sem Vermeersch earned his PhD from SOAS, University
of London and has authored several studies on the history of Korean
Buddhism, focusing on the Koryŏ dynasty.
