Description: On her return to Kyujanggak Institute, eminent Korean
Studies scholar Professor Martina Deuchler offers her reflections on
the last 40 years of Korean Studies as well as her views on the
prospects and future direction of the field. Professor Deuchler first
arrived at Kyujanggak in 1967 as a young researcher immediately after
receiving her Ph.D. from Harvard University. Her groundbreaking first
book, Confucian Gentlemen and Barbarian Envoys, pioneered the field of
Korean Studies while a subsequent book, The Confucian Transformation
of Korea, was awarded the Chang Chi-yôn Award for Korean History in
1993. Professor Deuchler now resides in Switzerland.
