I have just added a series of titles published during 2007 to my list of English translations of Korean literature:
I am not aware of any additional 2008 publications as yet, and would be glad to hear of any that appear. The list shows that since the start of 2001 at least 94 volumes of Korean literature in English translation have been published either in Korea or abroad. This is actually a quite extraordinary number.
It must be said that none has become an international bestseller published by a world-famous press. But since we cannot even offer our translations to any world-famous presses because they only deal with agents, we do the best we can. If it were not for the devoted individuals running the often very small non-profit presses who publish our translations, Korean literature would be almost totally unavailable. We owe them thanks. To the funding agencies, too, our thanks must go.
I encourage everyone on this List to buy multpile copies of books you enjoy, give them as presents to friends who know nothing about Korea, help ensure that our books don't languish in store-rooms for decades, or get pulped. They cry out to be read!
