The Centre for Korean Studies of Leiden University is pleased to announce that it has 
received an Institutional Grant from the Academy of Korean Studies for a 5-year research 
project entitled “History as Social Practice: unconventional historiographies of Korea,” 
which will allow us to provide two PhD grants for a maximum period of four years.

History as social practice is a research project that draws on such diverse fields as 
literature, religious studies, film and popular culture, cultural studies, and social 
sciences, highlighting the social relevance of history by analysing a wide body of 
representations of history in a broad range of media. Not discriminating between academic 
“high history” and popular “low history” this project instead examines the intricate web 
of mutual interaction of the two, wherein both the practitioners and the product are of 
interest. Keen to discern the social uses of history, this project has a particular 
penchant for other than orthodox historical sources. For the Leiden Centre for Korean 
Studies, with its library designated a “hub-library” by the Korean Film Commission 
(KOFIC), Korean cinema is one obvious, though not exclusive, location of discovering 
“unconventional historiographies of Korea”. Sources can include all kinds of digital media 
as well as more traditional forms of expression such as literature, music and the visual arts.

We call for applications from PhD candidates who wish to write a dissertation in English 
on a subject relevant to this project, starting 1 July 2009. The candidates selected will 
receive an annual grant of € 15,000 for a maximum of four years, in which period they are 
expected to complete the dissertation and rewrite it for publication as a monograph. 
Continuation of the PhD positions is conditional on demonstrable satisfactory progress and 
the continued support of the AKS for the project. PhD candidates are expected to have an 
excellent command of Korean and English and to be able to conduct research independently, 
as is required in the Dutch system.

Applicants are requested to send a short proposal (1000 words), together with a cv and the 
contact information of two referees to the project director Boudewijn Walraven, PO Box 
9515, 2300 RA Leiden, The Netherlands. Short-listed candidates will be asked for a more 
detailed proposal.

The deadline for submission of applications is 15 March 2009.
