BIO Mi-Ryong Shim is a PhD candidate for Modern Korean Literature
at Columbia University and currently researching representations of
Manchuria in late colonial period literature.

ABSTRACT That the novelist Kang Kyŏng-ae (1906~1943) wrote as a
proletariat writer, a woman writer, and a writer of diaspora allows
her a unique position within Korean literature of the 1930’s.  I focus
on her writings about the Korean diaspora in Kando, arguing that they
provide an alternative picture to many of the dominant narratives
about Manchuria circulating in the 1920’s and 30’s.  First, in
contrast to narratives that highlight the ethnic identity of the
diaspora over all other considerations, Kang’s works discuss the
violence occurring along ethnic lines without falling back upon
essentialized notion of nationalism.   Secondly, going against the
idea that establishment of Manchukuo brought regional stability, Kang
demonstrates that communal relationships were dissolving as the result
of political changes in post-1932 Manchuria.  Lastly, works produced
in Kang’s latter years differ from her earlier works, by taking a turn
toward interiority and moving away from narratives of organized
resistance.
