Members might like to know that yesterday a symposium and celebration were held in Seoul to mark the publication of the last volumes of the poems of Ko Un's Maninbo (Ten Thousand Lives) series, 25 years after it started. Some 4000 poems in all.

Librarians might need to know that instead of simply completing volumes 27-30, Ko Un has revised all the poems published since Volume 1 appeared in 1986 and Changjak gwa pipyong publishers have issued the complete (revised) work in a new format, 11 thick hardback volumes of poems and a companion volume with an index and critical essays etc, as a boxed set priced at 350,000 Won. Librarians should also be aware that a 38-volume set of Ko Un's collected works was published in Seoul by Gimm Young publishers in 2002.

Ko Un will be reading at Smith College early next week (Tuesday) and in Los Angeles later next week, in a rare journey to the US. The LA events are organized by his publisher, Green Integer. One reading will be at UCLA:
Thursday, April 22, 2010
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
243 Royce Hall
UCLA
Los Angeles,

and another at 7:30pm on Friday April 23 at the The Korean Cultural Center, 5505 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90036

I shall be in Seoul, translating. . .
