"Haebang shinhak" was the usual translation for the Latin-American "Liberation theology" in the 1980s and it was popular among the liberal protestant theologians who developed their own "Minjung theology" in an extension of it. It was always seen as a radical word and provoked the ire of the security forces under Chun Doo-hwan, not the delight of the man himself, I think. Nowadays the word survives in the name "Haebang-chon" for a district on the slopes of Namsan in Seoul, that was once a defiant squatter area (no more!).
