Report: Korea and the World Economy, IX: New Economic Order after the Global
Financial Crises, June 25-26, University of Incheon (Songdo)
 
For the ninth time conference Korea and the World Economy
took place and it deservedly became over time one of the most important
conferences for economists interested in Korea and Northeast Asia and beyond.
This year, the conference was organized jointly by the leading Association of
Kroean Economic Studies (AKES), the Bank of Korea, the Shinhan Financial Group,
the Korea Development Institute, The Korea Institute of Finance, the University
of Washington Research Center for International Economics and the Department of
Economics at the University of Incheon and took place at the beautiful new
campus of University of Incheon in Songdo International City, the newly
reclaimed city near Incheon airport. In 16 concurrent thematic sessions and
several plenary sessions around 60 papers were presented. Among the keynote and
plenary session speakers were Oh-Seok Hyun, President of the Korea Development
Institute and Jang-Yung Lee, Senior Deputy Governor of the Korean Financial
Supervisory Service. Eiji Ogawa of Hitotsubashi University spoke about regional
monetary integration in East Asia, Yin-Wong Cheung of the University of
California Santa Cruz discussed the issue of Renminbi misalignment. The organizers, among them Dongkoo Chang of
Bank of Korea, Karyiu Won of Honk Kong Baptist Universiy and University of
Washington as well as Won-Joong Kim of Kangwon National Universtiy deserve big
applause for this meaningful event and we can look forward to the tenth
anniversary of this successful conference series. .
