** *GENERAL SUMMARY*:
Reporting to the Curator for the East Asian Collection, the Korean
Studies Librarian performs collection development, public and
technical service activities to support teaching and research needs
of the faculty and students at the University of Chicago. The East
Asian collection consists of nearly 800,000 volumes in Chinese,
Japanese, and Korean languages of various formats. It also has a
growing collection of electronic resources.
*ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:*
Collection Development 35%
* Select materials in all format including electronic resources
in Korean language as purchases, gifts, or exchanges; select
materials on Korean studies in Western languages.
* In consultation with the Curator of East Asian Collection,
develop a long-term acquisitions policy; keep the Curator
informed about important changes in academic programs and
other academically-related matters affecting collection
development and management responsibilities of assigned
disciplines.
* Manage the acquisitions budget for Korean studies materials
including funds from foundations and the Center for East Asian
Studies.
* Establish and maintain good relationships with dealers,
electronic content providers, and exchange partners; maintain
current knowledge of book market, trade, and e-resource
development for Korean studies.
* Work with the Curator of the East Asian Collection, Library
Development Office, the Assistant Director for Collections,
and other specialized staff to identify and develop donor
sources and special funding opportunities; participate in
contacts with donors and potential donors including the
preparation of reports and personal visits.
Reference and Public Services 20%
* Provide specialized reference service in person, by telephone,
by e-mail, and mail; initiate specialized instruction
opportunities for faculty and students regarding the Library
and its resources as well as bibliographic methods and
research strategies; offer general reader assistance
pertaining to Korean studies or Korean resources to all patrons.
* Responsible for coordinating computer support and providing
services to Korean studies e-resources; develop and maintain
electronic finding aids and subject content on Korean studies
for the East Asian Collection’s web page.
* Communication with faculty and students in the assigned areas
of responsibility. Apprise faculty, students, and staff of new
publications, acquisitions, and services.
Technical Services 35%
* Under the direction of the Head of East Asia Technical
Services, perform original cataloging for Korean materials in
all formats.
* Advise technical services staff on matters relating to the
ordering and processing of Korean materials.
* Participate in formulating cataloging policy, priorities, and
work procedures.
Other 10%
* Serve on Library committees and task-forces.
* Submit a written annual report to the Curator of the East
Asian Collection.
* Participate in the activities of the library and scholarly
organizations at the local, regional, national, and
international level.
* Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned
** *QUALIFICATIONS*:
Education: Graduate degree from an ALA accredited MLS or MLIS is
required. An undergraduate or graduate degree in Korean Studies or
in a social science or humanities discipline with a principal
emphasis on Korea is highly desirable.
Experience: Substantial experience in a research library directly
related to the field of Korean studies is highly desirable as is
knowledge of Korean publishing industry and the book trade. Evidence
of special bibliographic and reference work is desirable. Experience
or good knowledge of OCLC, AACR2, LCSH and LC classification system,
and MARC21 format is required. Awareness of RDA and other metadata
standards is desirable.
Skills: Demonstrated ability to work both independently and
collaboratively in a changing and diverse environment is essential.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students and
staff; excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications
skills and a high degree of computer literacy are all required.
Knowledge of electronic resources and information technology
applications in Korean studies is desirable. Evidence of a
commitment to ongoing professional development is required.
Languages: Fluency in English and Korean languages including the
ability to process Korean materials written in Hanmun (classical
Chinese) is required.
