Invitation
In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of German unification, Germany has been
celebrating this year with various festivities amidst a rising national stature.
The entire German people have joined together now as one nation and are enjoying
the fruits of their remarkable economic development.
Meanwhile, Korea is the only remaining nation still enduring a Cold War
division, despite unremitting efforts by ourselves and neighboring countries to
resolve the ongoing North Korean nuclear issue. In the wake of this year’s flood
disaster and worsening economic hardship, the quality of our North Korean
brethrens’ living conditions has continuously deteriorated.
A careful in-depth analysis of the major achievements of German unification over
these two decades could have crucial implications for the unification of the
Korean peninsula.
KINU is convening an international conference on the topic of 20 Years after
German Unification and Preparing for Korean Unification in order to analyze
these implications and formulate a vision for a unified Korea through a review
of the perspectives of neighboring countries regarding the unification of the
Korean peninsula. This conference will hear recommendations and insights from
experts in related fields.
On behalf of the Korea Institute for National Unification, I am pleased to
welcome you to this conference. It is my hope that the insight and wisdom you
bring may help us to yield the fruitful results that are needed at this time.
October 2010
Jae Jean Suh
President
