[KS] Fourth Kyujanggak Symposium: Project of Modernization (Land Reform in the ROK)

Dear List,

Next Thursday and Friday (Aug. 25 & 26), the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies will hold its fourth international Symposium on Korean Studies. This time the conference topic is "The Project of Modernization: Reconsidering the Capitalist and Socialist Roads," which will take the land reforms undertaken in the ROK as one of the key subjects.

The outline program is as follows:

Thursday 25 Aug
9.30-10.00 Registration and opening ceremony
10.10-11.30 keynote presentations:
Ju Jong Hwan, "Political Economy of Convergence: With Special Reference to the Korean Economy after the Land Reform"

Hong Sung Chan, "Land Reform as a Modernization Project and Big Landowners"

14.00-17.00 Afternoon panels:
Session 1: New Evidence and New Perspectives on North Korean History

Session 2: National Narratives, Local Contexts: State Projects, Contention and Development on the Korean Peninsula

Friday 26 Aug
9.30-12.30 morning panels:
Session 3: Manchurian Memories and the Present

Session 4: The Communication and Enjoyment of Art in the Late Joseon Period

14.00-17.00 afternoon panel
Keynote session: Land Reform as an East Asian Reform Project

The sessions will take place in the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies (keynote presentations and panel) and in the Sinyang Social Science hall opposite Kyujanggak (other sessions)
